NAC Makana was founded in 2000 by Joint Venture Partnership: National Airways Corporation (known as NAC) and Makana Investments.

NAC has been in the aviation business since 1946. Over the years it has grown into the largest company of its kind in South Africa and one of the largest general aviation companies in Africa. The company has branch operations in Lanseria, Rand, Wonderboom, Durban, Cape Town and Gaborone in Botswana.

Makana Investments is part of the commercial arm of the Makana Trust that was established in 1995 at the reunion of former political prisoners on Robben Island. At the reunion it became very clear that the majority of ex-political prisoners were living in extreme poverty and lacked the basic skills to compete in a democratic society. This unfortunate situation led former President Mr. Nelson Mandela to call for the formation of the Ex-Political Prisoners Committee chaired by Mr Ahmed Kathrada.

Among the former political prisoners serving on this committee are several Cabinet Ministers and prominent business individuals. One of the initiatives of the committee was the formation of the Makana Trust. The objective of the trust is to pursue commercial activities In order to raise funds to address the plight of former political prisoners and their dependents.
